Blue Dart Express Limited was founded in November 1983 in Mumbai by a group of entrepreneurs as a domestic express courier company. It quickly became India’s first courier company to operate its own dedicated aircraft, giving it a significant speed advantage over competitors. In 2002, Blue Dart entered into a strategic alliance with DHL, and in 2004, DHL Group (Deutsche Post DHL) made a €120 million investment in Blue Dart, acquiring a major stake. Today, DHL Group is the principal shareholder, and Blue Dart operates as DHL’s South Asia hub.
Blue Dart is South Asia’s leading express air and integrated transportation company, covering 56,400+ domestic locations — the widest coverage of any private courier in India. The company handles approximately 1.5 million shipments per day and by 2024 was responsible for nearly 8% of all e-commerce shipments in India. Its air network connects 7 major hubs: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad — with Boeing 757 freighters operating nightly for next-day deliveries.
On January 14, 2025, Blue Dart inaugurated India’s largest low-emission integrated logistics facility in Bijwasan, Delhi — a 250,000 sq ft state-of-the-art facility designed for energy-efficient operations, automated sorting, and reduced carbon footprint. For FY2025, Blue Dart reported a total revenue of ₹5,762 crore, reflecting an 8.3% year-on-year growth despite challenging macroeconomic conditions.

Blue Dart is positioned as a premium courier and is priced higher than most domestic competitors — but offers industry-leading reliability, coverage, and speed. Charges are calculated on actual weight or volumetric weight, whichever is higher. Retail rates are listed below; contracted B2B rates are typically 20–35% lower.

Fuel surcharge
Applied monthly based on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices. As of late 2025, the fuel surcharge stood at approximately 13.5% on base freight
COD charges
Cash on Delivery service carries an additional ₹30–₹50 per shipment, plus 1–1.5% of the declared invoice value
Re-attempt fee
If a delivery attempt fails and re-delivery is needed, Blue Dart charges ₹50–₹100 per re-attempt depending on the zone and service
Remote area surcharge
Deliveries to J&K, Northeast states, islands, and other remote pin codes attract an additional surcharge of ₹40–₹120 per shipment
Volumetric weight (kg) = (Length cm × Width cm × Height cm) ÷ 5000
Example: A box measuring 40×30×20 cm and physically weighing 1 kg → volumetric weight = 4.8 kg → Blue Dart charges for 4.8 kg, not 1 kg. Always measure and optimise your packaging before booking.

Blue Dart uses volumetric weight for all services. Reducing box size by 5 cm on each side can save you 1–2 weight slabs and ₹50–₹150 per shipment
Use Dart Surfaceline for heavy goods
For non-urgent shipments above 10 kg, Dart Surfaceline (road) costs 30–45% less than Dart Apex (air) for the same route

Businesses shipping 10+ parcels per month qualify for a Blue Dart corporate account with negotiated rates 20–35% below retail prices
Book during off-peak
Blue Dart applies surge pricing during Diwali (Oct), year-end (Dec), and sales seasons. Booking a few days early avoids the 10–20% peak surcharge
Use Smart Box (flat-rate)
For shipments close to 10 kg or 25 kg, Blue Dart’s Smart Box offers fixed-rate packaging that eliminates volumetric weight surprises
Avoid COD where possible
COD charges add ₹30–₹50 plus 1–1.5% of shipment value. Converting customers to prepaid saves this cost on every order
