DTDC (Desk to Desk Courier & Cargo) was founded in 1990 by Subhasish Chakraborty in Bangalore, Karnataka. It was the first private courier company in India to introduce the franchise model — a decision that allowed the company to rapidly expand across every corner of the country without building company-owned offices everywhere.
Today, DTDC operates through a network of over 12,000 franchise partners covering 14,300+ pin codes across India. The company handles over 170 million parcels annually, with 75% of its customer base comprising e-commerce businesses. DTDC has a strategic partnership with GeoPost (a subsidiary of La Poste, France’s national postal service), giving it access to delivery networks across Europe and beyond.

DTDC charges are based on actual weight or volumetric weight — whichever is higher. Rates vary by zone (local, within-state, metro-to-metro, rest of India) and service tier. Rates below are approximate retail rates; business/contracted rates are typically 15–30% lower.

Example: A box of 40×30×20 cm weighing 1 kg → volumetric weight = 4.8 kg → you are charged for 4.8 kg

Use compact packaging
Reducing box dimensions by 2–3 inches on each side can drop you into a lower volumetric weight slab, saving ₹30–₹80 per shipment
Choose prepaid over COD
COD adds ₹30–₹60 per shipment. Switching to prepaid orders removes this surcharge entirely
Negotiate bulk rates
Businesses shipping 50+ parcels/month can negotiate contracted rates 15–30% below retail prices
Avoid peak season surcharges
During Diwali and other festivals, courier companies apply surge pricing. Book a few days early to avoid peak-season rates
Use surface over air
DTDC Lite (surface) is 40–60% cheaper than DTDC Blue (air express) for the same route — good for non-urgent, heavy items
Declare correct value
Under-declaring parcel value to save on insurance can backfire if the item is lost or damaged — always declare the actual value
DTDC does not accept the following items for domestic or international shipments. Sending prohibited items can result in package seizure, fines, or legal action.

Send a detailed email to customersupport@dtdc.com with your tracking number, issue description, and any photos of damaged packaging
Visit the nearest DTDC branch
For lost or damaged shipments, visit the originating branch in person with your booking receipt and a government-issued ID
